OK, so Friday’s showdown between Class B defending state champion Fairfield and Class C defending state champion Belt wasn’t quite the barnburner we would have liked.

Fairfield won its 53rd consecutive game by topping Belt 66-43. Four players scored in double figures for the Eagles and another player added nine. Kara Gerke scored 14 and Hannah Croff scored 10 for the Huskies.

In other local news, the Great Falls High boys improved to 2-0 in impressive fashion with a pair of victories this weekend. The CMR boys split thanks to Joey Marzion’s 23 points in a win over Havre Saturday. The Rustlers lost a stunner Friday when Glacier hit a 55-footer at the buzzer for a one-point victory.

The GFH girls split over the weekend, losing to Capital and beating Flathead. The CMR girls also split, losing at Glacier before shaking the rust off to beat Havre in overtime Saturday.

Diondra Denton, CMR’s Minot State signee was fairly quiet on offense as she scored only 10 points. But four of the points came on a layup at the buzzer to send the game into overtime and a key basket in the extra session. Sophomore shooting guard Taylor Edwards knocked down a trio of 3-pointers in the win over Havre and has looked impressive for Chad Olson’s Rustlers so far.

We also had our 2012 Tribune Super-State football team in today’s paper, so check that out. The teaser says the sports staff did it, but really our very own Dan Mediate deserves the credit since he did all the legwork.
