The Mustangs of Great Falls High Central Catholic continued their rise in the competitive football ranks on Saturday with a second straight impressive win to start the season.

Led by senior quarterback Kelby Depner, the Mustangs rolled over the Cascade Badgers 56-30 at GFCC.

Depner racked up 89 yards and two touchdowns on the ground while sophomore running back Nolan Donisthorpe amassed 130 yards and one scoring scamper.

Freshman rusher Maxx Sitzmann proved he belonged on the pitch after racing to 81 yards in the second half, including a 3-yard rumble into the end zone.

“We’re pleased to get a win like this and run the ball the way we did,” Mustangs’ head coach Mike Nelson said. “We want to have a good ground game and I think we took a step forward in having that as a true strength of our team.”

Depner completed 4 of 8 passes for 40 yards. He tossed scoring strikes to Carter Anderson and Donisthorpe.

The Mustangs (2-0) sailed to a 44-8 lead before halftime. The Badgers railed to add three touchdowns in the second half, but couldn’t get any closer to the shifty Mustangs.

GFCC linebacker Nick Yenchek stepped in front of a Wirth pass and returned it 15 yards to break up the Badgers’ second half surge.

“We looked sharp on defensive for the most part,” Nelson said. “We didn’t want to give up some of the big plays at the end.”

Cascade junior QB Cody Wirth went 8 for 21 for 190 yards and two TDs, including one 65-yard lob to Mark Melton. The lefty also had a 4-yard run for a score.

The Mustangs take their two-game hot streak on the road Friday to take on Chinook. Nelson was pleased with his Mustangs’ running game against the Badgers, but plans to be wary of the matchup with the Sugarbeeters.

“We don’t want to get in a track meet with Chinook,” Nelson said.
